Phrases to use in meetings

Below are some typical phrases you can use to help you to participate in business meetings. These phrases will help you to show you are actively listening and to confidently contribute to the meeting.

Tip: Often you need to be firm in business meetings to get your opinions or ideas heard. The words ´please´ and ´thank you´ are used a lot in English. Trying to use them often when asking questions or responding to people can help you avoid sounding rude while still being firm.

 

01. If you didn’t hear something:

  • Sorry, can you say that again please? 
  • I didn´t catch that last bit.
  • I didn´t quite hear that.
  • What was that you just said?

02. If you want to check what you have heard or if you didn´t understand:

  • Can I just check..?
  • Sorry, just to clarify…
  • Okay, so what you´re/ we´re saying is…
  • Correct me if I´m wrong…
  • If I understand correctly…

03. If you accidentally start speaking when someone else is speaking:

  • Sorry, you carry on…
  • After you…
  • Sorry I interrupted, what were you saying?
  • I didn´t mean to interrupt, please go on.

04. If you want to interrupt someone:

  • Sorry to interrupt…
  • Can I just add…?
  • Sorry, before you continue…
